Christmas is always a joyous time at the Shrine Church of Our Lady of Solace, from the indoor and outdoor crèches to the glorious decorations around the church and the carols sung with great fervor and beauty by the choirs. The church's beauty is further accentuated as it is "dressed in its best" for the celebration of the Lord's coming. Christmas 2007 saw a magnificent new crèche display installed in the church. The crèche display that had served in the church for decades was moved outdoors on Mermaid Avenue where it still greets parishioners and passers-by during the Advent and Christmas seasons. Over the course of the nine-day period before Christmas Eve, Father Giovani presides over a contemplative and lively Christmas Novena each evening. During the Christmas Midnight Mass homily, we can always expect a phone call of Christmas greeting from the Lord to Father West on the Mickey Mouse phone. (One of these years, maybe our Lord will have Walt Disney call instead.)
