The Two Rectories

Here is the original massive Italian Gothic rectory that once stood on a man-made hill between the church and school on the corner of Mermaid Avenue and West 19th Street. It contained accommodations for seven priests. During the late 1960's, the need for more parking space and the spectacularly high cost of maintenance for the aging, and mostly unoccupied rectory saw it and its hill razed.  The old rectory can be seen in its original location behind the church on the cover of the Golden Jubilee Journal on the Historic Images page.  Today, the main parking lot occupies the space.

This is the current smaller rectory at 2866 West 17th Street, one block east of the original position. The location (on what was once the eastern end of the original main parking lot) placed the Rectory adjacent to the convent.  Note that much of the cast iron fence from the original rectory site was moved here.
